NOVEMBER 21, 2011 Kathy Presents the 2011 Dan Eldon Activist Award

Kathy honored the winner of the 2011 Dan Eldon Activist Award, Erica Fernandez, at the 7th Annual MY HERO International Film Festival.  Ms. Fernandez emigrated with her family to the farming community of Oxnard from Mexico when she was 12 years old.  She soon developed a strong bond with the community based on common experiences and relationships with groups and individuals in Oxnard.  After learning that the wealthiest mining corporation in the world planned to develop an LNG pipeline from 13 miles offshore to the mainland, she became concerned.  When Erica learned that the company’s plan – based on the politics of wealthier surrounding communities – involved the construction of a major pipeline through Oxnard, she knew she had to act.  The film, titled Tools for Protest, was produced by The Institute for Advancing Unity and the Working Group.  Click here to watch Kathy’s introduction and the filmmaker’s acceptance speech.

MAY 7, 2011 Kathy on OWN – Extraordinary Moms

We’re thrilled that Extraordinary Moms, exec-produced by Julia Roberts, Amy Eldon Turteltaub, and Kathy Eldon, aired on the new Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) during Mother’s Day Weekend 2011.  The film features a warm and informative conversation between Julia and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, which reveals a side of both women that doesn’t often get expressed in the media.  The other moms are equally wonderful – Rosie O’Donnell is revelatory about her family and how the loss of her mother at at such an early age has affected everything she does – and Christiane Amanpour talking about her son and how he has changed her life is quite remarkable.  The other moms – the ones who are not yet known to the general public – are amazing as well – true creative activists, changing the world for the better one step at a time.  Thanks to this special, Julia Roberts will be the global spokesperson for safe and efficient cookstoves in developing nations in an initiative led by Creative Visions Foundation, the State Department and the UN Foundation.
